Several Romanian parties are starting negotiations on forming a government this week, the Romanian newspaper Hot News reports.
The first step has already been taken by forming a pro-European majority in the new legislature after the political parties signed a joint resolution aimed at opposing pro-Russian presidential candidate Kalin Giurgescu.
The Social Democrats, the Liberals, the Union for the Salvation of Romania, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania and representatives of other ethnic minorities will take part in the negotiations.
The Social Democratic Party, which won the parliamentary elections, is insisting on nominating the Prime Minister from its own ranks. The formation's leadership is due to decide at a meeting the prime ministerial proposal they will take to the talks. Marcel Cholakou is again the favourite for the post.
Another option is National Liberal Party leader Ilie Boloyan.
"If we are realistic, we cannot deny the result. When you enter a coalition, you have to size your forces correctly. There doesn't have to be a specific person as prime minister, you need strong teams in government, professionals, clear coalition programs, month by month, on vital projects to ensure that this coalition will work on the basis of trust," Boloyan said recently. | BGNES
