On December 29, former US President Jimmy Carter passed away, and his memory was honoured by other former US presidents, as well as by current head of state Joe Biden and other world leaders.
"Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian," President Biden said in a statement released by the White House.
"He saved, uplifted, and changed the lives of people across the globe," he added.
"The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans," US President-elect Donald Trump wrote on social media.
Former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat from the South like Carter, said his predecessor had "worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world".
In a statement with his wife and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, he added that Carter "lived to serve others - to the very end."
According to former President George W. Bush, Carter "served honorably in office. And his efforts to leave behind a better world did not end with the presidency."
Former President Barack Obama stated that Carter "taught us all what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice and service."
Among other American politicians who responded was Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said Carter "taught us that the power of a leader lies not in rhetoric but in action, not in personal gain but in service to others."
In one of the first reactions from abroad, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Carter was "a staunch defender of the rights of the most vulnerable and has fought tirelessly for peace.
"France sends its heartfelt thoughts to his family and to the American people," the French president added. | BGNES
