Flying start for Germany, scored five against Scotland in the opening game

Germany defeated Scotland 5-1 in the Euro 2024 opening game, which took place at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Julian Nagelsmann's selection played an incredible first half. Florian Wirtz scored the first goal. The 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 10th minute to give the Bundesliga the lead. Wirtz is the youngest German to score at a European finals - 21 years and 42 days old.

Jamal Musiala doubled the lead nine minutes later.

Scotland defender Ryan Porteous became the first player sent off at Euro 2024. He received a red card for a two-footed tackle on the hosts' captain Ilkay Gundogan. It happened a minute before the end of the half in the Scottish penalty area. French referee Clément Turpin had to review the VAR footage.

Kai Havertz scored the awarded penalty to give Germany a 3-0 lead at the break.

In the 58th minute, a centering pass from the left flank reached Wirtz, who fired over the goal from a clear position. 120 seconds after that, the Bayer (Leverkusen) star tried to strike the target again, but this time his shot was unsuccessful. Selector Julian Nagelsmann made a double substitution, taking out Havetz and Wirtz, with Niklas Fühlkrug and Leroy Sané coming on instead.

In the 68th minute, it was Füllkrug who made it 4-0 after another good German attack. With a quarter of an hour to go, the crowd at the Allianz Arena welcomed Bayern legend Thomas Muller, who replaced his teammate Musiala. Not long after, Füllkrug once again sent the ball into the Scottish goal, but his goal was cancelled out for offside.

In the 87th minute, Scotland also managed to get one goal back, although it was through an unfortunate own goal headed in by Antonio Rüdiger. Deep into added time, Emre Can made it 5-1 after a terrific shot from outside the penalty area where the ball found the bottom right corner. | BGNES
