Taylor Swift, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish are among the female performers believed to dominate MTV's 2024 European Music Awards, which will be held in Manchester, North West England, tonight.
The 30th edition of the ceremony, which brings together the biggest names in world music, kicks off at the city's new Co-op Live venue from 8pm local time.
British singer Rita Ora will host the awards, which are being held in the UK for the seventh time.
Ten of the eleven artists with the most nominations are women, with megastar Taylor Swift leading the way, AFP reports.
The American, whose ongoing "Eras" tour is the most lucrative in history, has been nominated in seven categories following the release this year of her eleventh album, "The Tortured Poets Department".
In the Best Female Artist category, she will go up against fellow countrywomen Beyoncé, Eilish, male rapper Post Malone and British star Ray, who won a record six gongs at this year's Brit Awards.
Sabrina Carpenter, one of the stars of the summer with her hit "Please Please Please," rounds out the nominees.
Best Song is between Eilish's "Birds of a Feather," Carpenter's "Espresso," Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em," Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things," Chapelle Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!" and Ariana Grande's "We Can't Be Friends."
Among the rising female stars competing in other categories are Lisa from the uber-popular k-pop group Blackpink and Nigerian star Ira Starr.
As with the U.S. music industry's Grammy Awards, Latin artists, including stars such as Puerto Rican Bad Bunny and Colombian Karol G, were left out of the top categories this year despite their worldwide hits.
Both were included in the field for best Latin songs, along with Shakira, who revived her career with the hit "Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53," dedicated to her breakup with former soccer player Gerard Pique.
Other artists to receive awards include Travis Scott, Dua Lipa and Charlie XCX, who is nominated in four categories. Busta Rhymes will receive the global icon award. | BGNES
