The Fire Department of New York announced that the situation on Roosevelt Island has been resolved and the area is safe, after earlier responding to reports of explosions in the area.
"The accident was probably caused by a transformer in the power grid," the police told The Independent.
Earlier, the fire service announced that the cause of the explosions in question could not be determined.
Electric utility Con Edison has been working to restore power to several buildings after the area was declared safe.
There are no reports of casualties. Many police teams, ambulances as well as helicopters were deployed at the scene earlier.
Just before 6 a.m. local time, residents of Manhattan and Queens called to report "small explosions" coming from Main Street, south of the Roosevelt Island streetcar line.
The island is located in New York's East River, within the borough of Manhattan, between Manhattan Island to the west and Long Island to the east. /BGNES
