The European Union has agreed on a draft agreement to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, the German publication Welt reports, citing a draft in its possession.
"The direct participation of EU soldiers on the side of Ukrainian soldiers in military actions against Russia is excluded," the piece states. According to Welt, in the event of an attack on Ukraine, the EU will offer Kiev consultations within 24 hours of the incident. The security guarantees under discussion cover political, military and economic assistance to Ukraine and should remain in place until Kiev joins the EU and NATO. The publication adds that Brussels wants to provide these guarantees by early July at the latest. The draft document is now being discussed with Kiev. /BGNES
