Legendary swimmer Michael Phelps has been named the #1 Athlete of the 21st Century by ESPN.
Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history, with an impressive 28 medals, 23 of which are gold. The American broke out at the 2008 Beijing Games when he won eight gold medals, seven of which were world records. Many experts then tried to get to the reason for Phelps' dominance in the pool, and his mother, Debbie, was often asked by the media what made her son so untouchable. And she was succinct, saying this: "His hard work".
In Phelps' company in the top 10 are also 23-time women's Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi, one of the greatest basketball players in history LeBron James, seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady, Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer , seven-time Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, golf legend Tiger Woods, 100m world record holder Usain Bolt and the late basketball player Kobe Bryant.
Just behind the top ten are tennis players Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, Cristiano Ronaldo (soccer) and Steph Curry (basketball).
