Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry left for Tehran to participate in the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Raisi died on May 19 in a helicopter crash. Along with Raisi, there were 7 other officials on board the helicopter, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
"Shoukri's visit is the first visit of an Egyptian foreign minister to Iran," the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported.
In recent decades, relations between Egypt and Iran have often been strained, although the two countries maintain diplomatic contacts.
In September last year, the foreign ministers of the two countries met during the UN leaders' meeting in New York, and Raisi said at the time that the meeting could pave the way for the restoration of ties.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met his Egyptian counterpart earlier this month in The Gambia on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit.
The two ministers discussed efforts to promote bilateral relations and the latest developments in the region, especially the ongoing situation in Gaza./BGNES
