The 51-year-old actor has been cast as the two-time UFC heavyweight champion in the new film, which is being directed by Benny Safdie - one-half of the duo behind the hit 'Uncut Gems'.
Safdie wrote and directed the film (which is his first solo project behind the camera) and has been working with The Rock on the 2019 film.
Kerr's rise in the world of combat sports and his addiction to painkillers that led to an overdose were detailed in the 2002 HBO documentary The Smashing Machine, a nickname he earned as a result of his fighting style.
The film will see Johnson return to his roots as he is known for starting his career as a professional wrestler and being a key figure in the success of the World Wrestling Federation (WWE) in the late 1990s.
A24 is financing the film and will produce alongside The Rock and Danny Garcia's Seven Bucks Productions.
The company's Noah Sacco said: "Dwayne and Benny are extraordinary talents, and their shared vision for Mark's inspiring story is electrifying. We are extremely honored that they have trusted us to collaborate on this incredibly special project."/BGNES
