Dramatic victory for the USA in the medal standings at the Olympics

The USA won the medal standings at the Paris Olympics in dramatic fashion.

Before the final game of the Games - the women's basketball final between the USA and France - China had a one-gold medal lead at the top of the standings.

That means the U.S. women are bound to win the title for the U.S. to overtake China, who have more silver medals. On the surface, that seemed like a given, given that the last time the American women's basketball team lost an Olympic game was in 1992. Since then, they have had 60 consecutive victories and seven Olympic titles.

However, the hosts had prepared excellent tactics and stood better on the court, and in the middle of the third part, the French women pulled away with 10 points. The American women still found strength and caught up with the passive, and seconds before the end they had a lead of three points. The game ended with France making a long shot at the buzzer, but replays showed that Gabby Williams stepped on the line and France only took two points, giving the USA a 67-66 win.

So again the USA is the winner in the medal ranking of the Olympics:

1. USA - 40 gold, 44 silver, 42 bronze (126 total)

2. China - 40 gold, 27 silver, 24 bronze (91)

3. Japan - 20 gold, 12 silver, 13 bronze (45)

4. Australia - 18 gold, 19 silver, 16 bronze (53)

5. France - 16 gold, 26 silver, 22 bronze (64)
