Donald Trump was named Person of the Year 2024 by Time magazine

Donald Trump, the president elected to a second term at the helm of the United States after being convicted by the courts and escaping two assassination attempts, has been named Person of the Year by Time magazine.

The Republican, who is at the center of a "stunning political comeback," the magazine said, had already received that distinction in 2016, during his first surprise presidential victory over Democrat and poll favorite Hillary Clinton.

"Today, we are witnessing a resurgence of populism, a growing distrust of the institutions that defined the last century, and an erosion of faith that progressive values will lead to a better life for most people. Trump is both the agent and the beneficiary of all this," Time magazine editor Sam Jacobs wrote, as quoted by AFP.

"For leading a historic comeback, for bringing about a unique political realignment, for transforming the American presidency and changing America's role in the world, Donald Trump is Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2024," he added.

Donald Trump is also expected in New York on December 13 to symbolically strike the bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). | BGNES
