Republican Party candidate Donald Trump is the new 47th president of the United States after defeating his rival Kamala Harris, projected results show, reports BGNES.
The Republican Party will have full control of the US House of Representatives and Senate, meaning at least two years of full power for Trump. He garnered the necessary 270 electoral votes in the presidential election, which was held on November 5, against 213 for Harris. The Republican will govern for the second time after his first term from 2017-2021.
Trump won elections in Florida, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Louisiana, Kentucky, Nebraska, West Virginia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Idaho, North Carolina and South Carolina. The former president also won the popular vote for the first time.
Kamala Harris prevailed in Vermont, Colorado, California, Maryland, Delaware, New York, the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Illinois, Washington, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, New Mexico, Oregon, US media, including the PBS, predicted.
The billionaire's triumph means this will be only the second time someone has returned to the White House after previously losing a race for a second term. The big winner will take office in January 2025 for a four-year term.
Republicans also have a 51-seat majority in the Senate and so far lead 192 to 165 in the House of Representatives, where 218 are needed for a majority.
