Djokovic gets past tricky German to set up quarter-final showdown with Tsitsipas in Paris

Novak Djokovic is through to the quarter-finals of the men's Olympic tennis tournament in Paris after beating Dominic Koepfer of Germany 7-5, 6-3. The number 1 seed finished the job in nearly one hour and 40 minutes.

The Joker, eyeing a first Olympic singles title in his otherwise remarkable career, struggled against the German in the opening set, breaking into a lead but Koepfer immediately clawed back. However, it came to the 12th game, in which the Serbian broke again his opponent's serve and this turned out to be decisive for an advance in the result. In the second set, Nole started with an early break, which put an end to the dispute between the two.

Djokovic served strongly, winning 86% of first serve points throughout the match and hit five aces without a single double fault. He and Koepfer each finished with 19 winners, but the German tennis player made eight unforced errors more. The better of the two tennis players made a mistake only once in 14 outings at the net.

In contention for a place in the semi-finals, Djokovic will play Stefanos Tsitsipas. Greece's best male tennis player overcame Argentina's Sebastian Baez 7-5, 6-1. | BGNES
