Detroit Electric: The electric car of 1907

Detroit Electric is a legendary American automobile brand founded in 1907 and was one of the pioneers of electric vehicles in the early 20th century.

Founded by William Anderson and run by the Anderson Electric Car Company, the company achieved considerable success by producing sleek and reliable electric vehicles in an era when most cars had steam or gasoline engines.

The Detroit Electric models, especially popular with the wealthy and women, featured innovative design and easy handling. Their electric vehicles were quiet, had no fuel odor, and required no crank to start, making them a preferred choice over gasoline-powered vehicles. The vehicles' batteries could last up to 130 km on a single charge, while reaching a top speed of around 32 km/h - ideal for city driving.

Detroit Electric produced over 13,000 electric cars between 1907 and 1939, reaching its peak in the 1910s. Despite its successful start, the brand was overshadowed by the development of gasoline engines, which began to dominate the market thanks to their greater range and lower fuel cost.

Today, with the growing interest in electric vehicles, Detroit Electric is once again trying to establish itself in the market as a symbol of innovation and sustainable mobility. The company, which revived the brand in 2008, strives to combine the traditional spirit of Detroit Electric with the latest technology in electric vehicles. | BGNES
