Danish Foreign Minister Lars Locke Rasmussen said that no country can just take "whatever it wants" just because of its power. Denmark's top diplomat was referring to the words of US President Donald Trump, who reiterated that he would take control of Greenland, AFP reported.
"Of course we can't have a world order where countries, if they're big enough, no matter what they call themselves, can just take whatever they want," Rasmussen said.
Although he did not mention Greenland in his January 20 inauguration speech, Trump was asked about the topic by reporters in the Oval Office afterward.
"Greenland is a wonderful place, we need it for international security," Trump replied.
"I'm sure Denmark will accept - it costs them a lot of money to maintain it (the island - ed.)," he added.
The Danish foreign minister said he was "pleased" that Trump had not mentioned Greenland as a priority in his speech, but added that the "rhetoric" was the same.
"It doesn't make me cancel any crisis because he said other things about expanding into US territory," the top diplomat told Danish media.
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede insisted that "Greenland is not for sale" but that the territory was open for doing business with the US. | BGNES
