DeChambeau leads Scheffler by one stroke after opening day at the Masters

Bryson DeChambeau holds a one-stroke lead over Scottie Scheffler after the opening day of the prestigious Masters golf tournament, traditionally held in Augusta, Georgia. The first day was affected by rain, which delayed the program and Rory McIlroy made a mixed start to the campaign in his bid of a Career Slam.

DeChambeau made five birdies in six holes for a -7-under-par 65 at Augusta National. The start of the game was delayed two and a half hours due to overnight rain and the threat of thunderstorms. The 2020 US Open champion initially held a three-shot lead over nearest challenger Danny Willett, who marked his first start since September with a round of 68. Willett was overtaken, however, by Scheffler, who produced a brilliant first round with no bogeys. Scheffler, who is trying to win the Green Jacket for the second time in three years, was in the same group as McIlroy - the Northern Irishman had his best opening round at Augusta since 2018, but is still six shots off the first place.

Defending champion John Rahm had a bad day and shot a round of 73. He is trying to become the first golfer to defend his crown since legend Tiger Woods, who was -1 with five holes to go when play was suspended due to darkness.

The first round has now resumed, with Dustin Johnson, Colin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood each having eight holes to go. The second round started about half an hour ago, with the tournament expected to go on schedule going into the weekend. /BGNES
