Dani Olmo: The priority is to win the trophy, not to become the top scorer

Spain playmaker Dani Olmo is one of the contenders for the top scorer award at Euro 2024 along with England striker Harry Kane, but was adamant today that he does not care about the Golden Boot as long as the team win the European title.

Olmo and Kane have three goals each since the start of the tournament - as many as four other players - and if one of them scores in Sunday's final, he is very likely to become the top scorer.

However, Spain are gunning for a record fourth European title and Olmo said that was a priority over a potential individual award. "This is additional motivation. But as long as we win, I don't really care if me or goalkeeper Unai Simon scores. I really don't care, the important thing is to win the match, but I always want to help my teammates", the offensive player told reporters.

So far, Olmo has two assists, but unlike the previous championship, this time the additional indicators will not affect who will become the top scorer. The RB Leipzig midfielder was not among La Furia Roja coach Luis de la Fuente's first choice, but has scored in all three of the Spaniards' elimination games. He replaced the injured Pedri in the quarter-final with Germany, first scoring the equalizer and then assisting Mikel Merino for the winner. Olmo subsequently also scored against France in the semi-final.

"I'm feeling really good in this tournament, I'm in strong form, so I have to continue to take advantage of that. It's true that Kane and I have the same number of goals, but there are other players who have helped us get here. Speaking of goals, Fabian Ruiz has two goals, Alvaro Morata has one - if he gets a hat-trick, he'll be top scorer and we'll be just as happy - it doesn't matter who scores, it's the team".

Olmo scored a hat-trick for Leipzig in a 3:0 German Super Cup win over Bayern Munich when Kane made his debut for the Bavarians last August. The 30-year-old striker continues to search for a first trophy at club and international level. "Of course it will be a dream to score a hat-trick again and win the trophy. But, I repeat myself, the goal is only to win", concluded the Spain midfielder. | BGNES
