Brazil opened their Copa America campaign with a dull 0-0 draw against Costa Rica and James Rodriguez inspired Colombia to a 2-1 win over Paraguay.
Brazil, chasing a tenth Copa America title, dominated possession in the Group D match at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles but struggled to break down a determined Costa Rica side.
The Brazilians thought they had taken the lead in the 30th minute when Marquinhos tapped in at the back post from Rafinha's free-kick.
But after an agonizing VAR delay, the goal was disallowed for a flagrant offside and Costa Rica escaped.
That was the best for Brazil, who struggled to break through Costa Rica's defense for the rest of the match, registering just three shots on target despite having 73.5% of the ball.
Costa Rica were content to sit back, defend and rarely get forward with any purpose.
The Costa Ricans failed to get a single shot on goal throughout the match.
The result means Colombia end the day top of Group D after collecting all three points in a deserved win over Paraguay at NRG Stadium in Houston.| BGNES
