Colombia played better and drew 1-1 with Brazil, securing a place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America as group winners.
Daniel Munoz's first-half stoppage-time equalizer was enough to secure Colombia top spot after Raphinha had fired Brazil ahead with a wonderful 12th-minute free-kick at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The result means Colombia qualify for the knockout rounds as winners of Group D, where they will face Group C runners-up Panama.
However, the draw means Brazil will face a titanic clash in Las Vegas against Group D winners Uruguay with a perfect asset.
Brazil will go into this quarter-final clash without Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, who received his second yellow card of the tournament for a reckless foul early on on James Rodriguez.
Midway through the first half, tensions threatened to explode and Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela handed out three yellow cards in quick succession to Colombian players Deiver Machado and Jefferson Lerma, as well as Brazil's Joao Gomes.
Colombia looked the more confident throughout the first half and in extra time their crafty play was rewarded as Crystal Palace winger Munoz scored after an excellent pass from veteran Jhon Cordoba.
Colombia looked comfortable in the second half and should have sealed victory in the dying minutes, only for substitute Rafael Borre to fire wide into an empty net.
In the other Group D match, Costa Rica beat Paraguay 2-1 in Austin to take third place.
