Coco Goff is out of the Olympics after losing to Donna Vekic

The American lost to the Wimbledon semifinalist 6-7 (7), 2-6.

Coco Goff crashed out of the Olympic tournament in Paris after falling to Donna Vekic in a round of 16 match 6-7 (7), 2-6. The match lasted exactly two hours.

Vekic, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon where she lost in dramatic fashion to Jasmine Paolini in three sets, showed great spirit in the opening set where she trailed 2-5. The 13th-ranked Croatian saved a set point in the eighth game before breaking back and then taking the tiebreak. In it, Vekic had to save two more set points at 4-6 to her detriment. In the end, she managed to close things in her favor after 9-7 points.

In the second set, Goff led with a break for 2-1, but that turned out to be all she had in the match. The next five games went to Vekic's account, with which she found a place in the last eight of the tournament. Maria Sakari (Greece) or Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) are waiting for her there.

Angelique Kerber, Qinwen Zheng and Danielle Collins have also progressed, with Kerber and Zheng set to play each other in the quarter-finals, with Collins awaiting world No.1 Iga Schwiontek, who has China's Xiu Wan as her opponent tonight. | BGNES
