Alexander Zverev crashed out of the home tennis tournament in Munich after losing to Cristian Garin 4-6, 4-6. The quarter-final match lasted about two hours.
Zverev, seeded at No. 1, broke in the third game of the opening set. Garin, the 2019 tournament champion, saved a break point in the next game to lead 3-1. It happened again in the tenth game when the Chilean was serving for the set – he fended off a break point and then held back. The second set started with break points for Garin, but he didn't capitalize. In the fifth game, however, the South American waited for his moment and then never looked back for the ultimate victory.
Thus, the two-time champion in Munich is out and Garin continues to the semi-finals, where the third in the scheme, Taylor Fritz, awaits him. The American broke the resistance of Jack Draper of Great Britain after 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1).
The other semi-final in the bottom half will be decided by the Marc-Andrea Huesler vs. Holger Rune (the Dane is the reigning two-time champion) and Felix Auger-Aliasime vs. Jan-Lennard Struff matches. /BGNES
