The Chelsea team qualified for the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Newcastle 4-2 after a penalty shoot-out (1-1) in regular time. At Stamford Bridge, the home side needed a 92nd-minute equalizer from Mykhailo Mudric to reach a penalty shoot-out where they were more accurate than their opponents.
The match started with a controversial refereeing decision after a very dangerous tackle by Moises Caicedo on the feet of Anthony Gordon was only punished with a yellow card by the referee, Caicedo lucky that this tournament does not use the VAR system which would most likely have resulted in eviction. In the 16th minute, the Magpies took the lead with a goal from striker Callum Wilson, which came after a series of mistakes by the Blues players. In the second half, striker Christopher Nkunku made his debut for Chelsea, and in stoppage time a mistake by Kieran Trippier allowed Mudric to equalise. In the penalties, Trippier was again at fault and missed, and the other miss for the visitors was Matt Ritchie.
Thus, Chelsea qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament, and Newcastle continues to wait for the first trophy since 1969.
