Catania airport reopens after Etna erupts

"Due to the reduction in volcanic activity, flight operations will resume," the airport operator wrote to X.

Departures will resume from 18:00 and four arrivals per hour will be allowed from 20:00, the message said.

All flights will resume from 22:00.

Earlier today, the airport suspended all flights "due to eruptions and ash emissions".

That message was posted with a warning image of Mount Etna with the overlaid texts "high intensity" and "ongoing volcanic activity."

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported that the ash column had reached a height of eight kilometres.

At 3,324 metres, Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe and has erupted frequently over the past 500,000 years.

Catania airport was last closed on 5 July due to an eruption. | BGNES
