Tihomir Ivanov qualified for the final in the high jump at the Olympic Games in Paris. The Bulgarian cleared 2.24m. He then failed three times at 2.27m, a height he has not cleared this season. However, he was among the competitors who would argue for the medals in the discipline.
This will be the second Olympic final in his career and his third appearance at the biggest sports forum, after finishing tenth in his debut in Rio 2016.
Neither competitor jumped the set qualifying standard of 2.29 meters as 2.27 proved sufficient to continue in the medal race. A total of five tackled this height.
The two Olympic champions from Tokyo - Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar with 227 cm and Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy with 224 cm - continue to fight for medals, but both had many problems in the high-jump sector.
The bronze medalist of the World Championships in Eugene 2022 and the European indoor vice-champion from Istanbul 2023 Andriy Protsenko (Ukraine) surprisingly dropped out in the screenings, who committed three fouls at the starting height of 2.15 meters.
The final is on August 10 at 20:00.
Ivanov, the only one of the five Bulgarian representatives in athletics who started at the Paris 2024 Games, managed to overcome the qualifications. Before him, Mirela Demireva (high jump), Gabriela Petrova (triple jump), Bozhidar Saraboyukov and Plamena Mitkova (long jump) could not qualify for the final in their disciplines. | BGNES
