Bulgaria and 20 other countries called for a tripling of nuclear energy

Bulgaria is among more than 20 countries that accepted on Saturday at the UN climate talks a call to triple the world's nuclear capacity as part of efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, reported AFP. Among the other countries that have signed the declaration with the call are Great Britain, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, South Korea, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Japan , Ghana.

The Declaration states that nuclear power plays a "key role" in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. The goal is to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050 compared to 2020 levels. The use of nuclear power as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels is controversial, as environmental groups are concerned about the safety and disposal of nuclear waste. "We're not making the argument to anyone that this is going to be an absolute alternative to any other energy source," US climate envoy John Kerry said at the COP28 conference in Dubai. “But we know because the science and the reality of the facts and the evidence tells us that you can't get to zero in 2050 without nuclear. These are just scientific realities. There is no intervention of politics or ideology in this," he emphasized. /BGNES
