EU leaders have decided that Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will start negotiations to join the EU.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, wrote on the X social network that the European Council has decided to start negotiations with BiH.
"Your place is in the European family. Today's decision is a key step forward on your path to the EU. Now the hard work must continue so that BiH can progress as your people want," Michel wrote.
BGNES recalls that last week the EC published a report in which it concluded that BiH sufficiently meets the conditions for starting the long road to EU membership.
At their meeting in December 2023, EU leaders gave the "green light" to start accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova after these countries took the important steps outlined in the EC's enlargement report of 8 November 2023. They then expressed their willingness to start accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina when the membership criteria are sufficiently met.
