"The killing of Hassan Nasrallah is justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis and Lebanese civilians."
US President Joe Biden said this after it emerged that the leader of the Lebanese group Hezbollah had been killed in Israeli strikes on Beirut, AFP reported.
Biden reaffirmed US support for "Israel's right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis and all other Iranian-backed terrorist groups."
"They directed the secretary of defense to further strengthen the defensive posture of US military forces in the Middle East region to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader regional war," the US president said.
His statement came as the State Department ordered family members of its diplomats in Beirut to leave. At the same time, the diplomatic department authorized the departure of some officials "due to the volatile and unpredictable security situation in Beirut."
