Belgium beat Romania to breathe new life into their Euro 2024 challenge

Tielemans breathed new life into Belgium's Euro 2024 campaign as the Aston Villa midfielder's goal just 73 seconds into the match inspired a vital 2-0 win against Romania on Saturday.
Domenico Tedesco's side would have been on the brink of elimination had they suffered a second straight Group E defeat.

But Tielemans' strike allayed fears of another failure for star-studded Belgium at a major tournament.

Kevin De Bruyne grabbed the points in the closing minutes to leave the four teams in the group level on points.
A dramatic final round of matches awaits in the battle to reach the next phase of Euro 2024.

Belgium will face Ukraine and Romania will play Slovakia on June 26.

With the two countries separated by 45 places in the FIFA rankings, Belgium's 1-0 loss to Slovakia on Monday was the biggest upset in European history.
Romania, ranked 47th, fought bravely, but this time Belgium's higher class proved decisive.

After crashing out in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup and losing in the quarter-finals of the last two European Championships, Belgium's golden generation have been given new hope that they will finally fulfill their immense potential.

Romania won 3-0 against Ukraine on Monday - their first win at a major tournament since beating England at Euro 2000.

Despite that loss, Eduard Iordanescu's side are still in contention to reach the knockout stages of the Euros for the first time in 24 years.

Belgium have failed to score for more than 300 minutes at major tournaments since scoring against Canada at the last World Cup.

It took them less than two minutes to end that drought.

The highlight of the game was when Jeremy Doku found Romelu Lukaku in the Romania box and he cut the ball back to Tielemans, who from the edge of the box fired a powerful low shot past Florin Nita.

Tottenham Romanian defender Radu Dragushin came close to equalizing moments later with a high header that Cohen Casteels saved with all his might.
After an injury-plagued season at Manchester City, De Bruyne looked below his best against Slovakia. But in this match, the Belgium captain was much more influential. De Bruyne finally delivered the knockout blow against Romania in the 80th minute. | AFP, BGNES
