Former President Barack Obama told Democrats gathered in Chicago that the United States is "ready" for Kamala Harris to become president.
"And Kamala Harris is ready for the job. This is a man who has spent his life fighting for people who need a voice," Obama said to raucous applause at the Democratic National Convention. Democratic Party delegates formally endorsed Kamala Harris as the U.S. presidential nominee in a ceremonial vote. At the national convention in Chicago, 4,566 delegates voted for her.
According to CNN, the ceremonial voting has begun in the state of Delaware. Voting followed in California and Minnesota, the home states of Kamala Harris and her chosen vice presidential candidate, Tim Waltz. The announcement of the results of the public vote took place at the sports hall United Centre.
Harris did not attend the convention in Chicago. She joined the ceremony via video link from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she was holding her third campaign rally. "We are honored to be your nominees. Our campaign is led by the people and together we will find a new path forward," she said.
The Democratic Party formally nominated Kamala Harris as its candidate for the August 7 presidential election. Ms. Harris is not running in the intra-party election. Her nomination was offered by US President Joe Biden after he announced his withdrawal from the race. The US election will take place on 5 November 2024 | BGNES
