Banknotes bearing the face of King Charles III will be issued for the first time on 5 June 2024. The King's face will appear on the existing designs of the four banknotes (£5, £10, £20 and £50).
Polymer banknotes bearing the image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will remain legal tender. The new notes will only be printed to replace worn ones and to meet any overall increase in demand for notes. This approach is consistent with guidelines for minimizing environmental and financial impact. This means that the public will start seeing the new King Charles III banknotes slowly and gradually.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said:
“We are very pleased to be issuing the new notes with King Charles. This is a historic moment as we are changing the sovereign on our banknotes for the first time. We know that cash is important to many people, and we are committed to providing notes for as long as society demands them. The release of these new notes is a demonstration of our commitment.” | BGNES
