Baldur's Gate 3 crushed the competition at the BAFTA Video Game Awards

The role-playing game "Baldur's Gate 3," based on the world of Dungeons and Dragons, crushed the competition by winning multiple awards at the annual BAFTA ceremony in London, AFP reports.

Set in a fantasy realm populated by wizards, elves, barbarians and other characters, the game, created by Belgian studio Larian Studios, won the award for game of the year.

It also won the Players' Choice Award, voted for by the public, as well as the BAFTA Awards for music, narration, and performance, bringing the total number of awards won at the ceremony in central London to 5.

The composer of Baldur's Gate 3, Bulgarian Borislav Slavov, found it hard to hold back his tears when he received the award for Best Music, and thanked the BAFTAs for "this special moment in my life".

"I believe that if you don't leave a piece of your heart in the music, no one can enjoy it... I want to thank each and every one of you in this room," he said.

The medieval-fantasy game, part of a saga of popular games dating back to the late 1990s, has already won the grand prize at the Game Awards 2023 in Los Angeles in December.

Since its release in August, it has enjoyed unprecedented commercial success, selling more than 10 million copies on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, according to the studio.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, which won the Technical Achievement Award, was among the other winners at the BAFTAs, which are in their 20th year.

The latest instalment in the adventures of elven warrior Link has enjoyed outstanding success since its release in 2023 on Switch, the console from Japanese video game giant Nintendo.

With more than 10 million copies sold in three days, "Tears Of The Kingdom" has become Nintendo's fastest-selling game of all time: more than 20 million copies by 2023, according to Nintendo.

The "Zelda" games franchise includes more than a dozen titles - many of which rank among the best video games of all time - and has sold more than 150 million copies.

The latest installment is the sequel to 2017's "Breath of the Wild," named one of the best Switch titles.

Meanwhile, "Super Mario Bros. Wonder," another Switch game in Nintendo's franchise, won the BAFTA Family Game Award and the Multiplayer Award.

The PS5 game "Alan Wake 2" won two BAFTAs, and actor Naji Jeter was honored for his portrayal of the lead role of Miles Morales in "Marvel's Spider-Man 2." / BGNES
