Apple is in talks to invest in OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT and the biggest name in generative artificial intelligence.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the company founded by Steve Jobs intends to invest heavily in OpenAI, which is raising more funds to meet the high costs of creating new technologies.
OpenAI is reportedly in talks to reach a $100 billion valuation in a funding round led by venture capital firm Thrive Capital, which will bring in $1 billion.
For months, news had been reporting that OpenAI was in talks to raise capital that would make it one of the most valuable tech companies in the world.
Microsoft, which is OpenAI's largest investor and receives half of the startup's profits, also participated in the new round of funding.
Apple's entry into OpenAI ownership, if confirmed, would come as the company announces its new iPhones on September 9, which are expected to leverage innovations in artificial intelligence.
In June, Apple announced that it was making OpenAI technology available as an option in its top-end iPhone software, but added that AI tools created by other companies would be available over time.
Most of the artificial intelligence functions used by Apple users will use the company's own technology, but more complex tasks will be transferred to the forces of OpenAI, if the customer chooses to do so. | BGNES
