A Russian general has died during his mission in Ukraine, the governor of the Voronezh region announced - this is the last high-ranking Russian military officer to die during the 21-month offensive, reported AFP.
Russian officials rarely talk about their losses in Ukraine, but have acknowledged the deaths of several high-ranking officers.
"Piercing pain. Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps of the Northern Fleet, died in the line of duty," Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev said in Telegram.
Gusev paid tribute to Zavadsky, calling him "a brave officer, a true general and a worthy man."
He did not specify the circumstances under which the senior military man died.
Russian Telegram channels with military sources said he was killed in late November after stepping on a mine far from the front line, suggesting it may have been a device previously planted by Russian forces.
The announcement comes as Russian troops attempt to capture Avdiivka, an industrial town in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region that has become one of the most contested points on the front line./BGNES
