Actress Angelina Jolie has been left "heartbroken" after not receiving an Academy Awards nomination for her role in the biopic "Maria".
The 49-year-old Hollywood star won huge praise from critics and a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas. She spent months training in singing for the role.
Jolie, however, did not receive an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category, despite huge expectations that she would be included.
"Angelina will be devastated. Look at all the media campaign she did for the film - she wanted to be nominated. She was on Jimmy Fallon - her first late night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham awards. She was photographed on all the magazine covers," an Oscars source told Page Six.
A second inside Hollywood awards source suggested the decision could have wider implications.
"This was not good for Angelina or Netflix," he said.
Another source linked Jolie's decision not to be included on the Oscar nominees list to her public divorce from Brad Pitt, finalised in December after years of litigation between the two.
"It just goes to show that Hollywood is Team Brad. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a voice, people just love Brad," he added.
The film "Maria," written by "Peaky blinders" creator Steven Knight, focuses on Maria Callas' final days before her death in 1977.
Angelina spoke of wanting to make the singer's grief "personal to me", and her sons Maddox and Pax worked as assistants on the project.
The actress reflects on the emotional weight of the role of Maria Callas.
"The character is in a lot of pain and (my sons) have of course seen me go through a lot, but they haven't encountered me expressing a lot of the pain that parents usually hide from their children," she told the BBC.
Oscar nominees for best actress include Mikey Madison for "Anora," Fernanda Torres for "I'm Still Here," Demi Moore for "Substance," Carla Sofia Gascon for "Emilia Perez" and Cynthia Erivo for "Maleficent." | BGNES
