Nine months after Elon Musk connected an isolated Amazonian tribe to the internet, serious problems have emerged - most notably an addiction to porn that is ravaging the community's young men.
Elders of the Maroubo tribe admitted that the Tesla founder's Starlink service was a huge celebration for them, but later it all turned upside down... "because some chaste men of the tribe are now exhibiting aggressive sexual behavior."
One member of the tribe, which numbers about 2,000 people, Alfredo Maroubo, told the New York Times about the community's problems. Some of the men are now even sharing sexual videos in group chats. Alfredo fears his fellow men will want to mimic the graphic content they see on screen.
It's not just pornography that's causing concern - other problems range from children playing violent shooting games to chatting to strangers online and getting addicted to their phones for hours on end.
According to another member of the tribe, Tsaynama Marubo, they are also becoming lazy and adopting "white people's ways."
Despite the challenges, the internet has changed the remote tribe's lives for the better in other areas - for example, allowing them to call for help in emergencies.
The WWW has also opened up a world of educational resources for them. and expanded their horizons beyond their immediate surroundings.
It seems that the Marubo tribe has found itself between a hammer and an anvil as it navigates the jungle of possibilities on the Internet! | BGNES
