Amazon to make movies and TV series based on Warhammer game

US tech titan Amazon has agreed to develop films and TV series based on the Warhammer 40,000 board game, its British owner has announced.

Games Workshop and Amazon agreed "creative guidelines" for the projects under a deal that gives Amazon exclusive rights to any film or TV series based on the futuristic fantasy universe.

No financial details were disclosed, and the announcement came as Games Workshop's value soared this year, allowing the company to soon join London's highest stock index, the FTSE 100, AFP reports.

The deal also gives the US e-commerce giant merchandising rights and the ability to develop Games Workshop's other Warhammer universes, including ones based on the Middle Ages.

"This could be extremely lucrative for the brand," noted Kathleen Brooks, research director at trade group XTB.

"The miniature maker is now bigger than Burberry and EasyJet," she added.

The gaming company is worth around £4.7bn, with its share price up more than 40% this year.

Interest in its miniature fantasy figures has grown globally as consumers enjoy fantasy series such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, a video game developed by publisher Focus, attracted 4.5 million players, making it one of the biggest products of its kind this year.

Founded in 1975 by three game enthusiasts, Games Workshop develops its figures at the company's headquarters in Nottingham, central England. | BGNES
