Alexander Zverev left no chance to Carlos Alcaraz, beating him 7:6(5) 6:4 in an ATP Finals match in Turin. The match lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, and the German won the "John Newcombe" group without losing a set and will compete with Taylor Fritz in the semifinals.
At the same time, it was the second loss for Alcaraz since the beginning of the tournament after that of Casper Ruud. The Spaniard still has a theoretical chance of progressing, but it is based on Andrei Rublev's straight set win over the Norwegian later today.
The first set lasted a little more than an hour and was decided after a tiebreak in which Zverev prevailed with 7:5 points. The world No. 2 dominated the court and could have easily secured a lead in the result earlier after missing a set ball at 6:5 in his favor. In the tiebreak, Zverev led with 5:2 points, then closed the set with 7:5 after 65 minutes of play at Inalpi Arena.
The first break in the match came in the opening game of the second half. Alcaraz led 40:0 and it looked like there would be no problems, but instead Zverev recorded a series of five consecutive points on his account, with which he guaranteed himself the lead. Literally seconds later, the break was cemented with a game at 0, with which Zverev took a huge step towards ultimate success.
In the sixth game, Alcaraz in turn reached break points at 40:15, but Zverev, pressed against the wall, found his best shots and escaped - 4:2. By the end of the match, Alcaraz was never able to return the break and conceded in two sets. | BGNES
