Carlos Alcaraz won his second consecutive Wimbledon title after an emphatic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Novak Djokovic in nearly two and a half hours of play. Last year the two played out an epic five-set clash for the trophy, but this time there was only one tennis player on the court and that was the 21-year-old Spaniard.
The match began with a long game that lasted about 15 minutes, in which the seven-time champion Djokovic was eventually broken. From there, Alcaraz gained control of the court and his aggressive game from the bottom of the court and on the serve simply made the Serbian helpless. Thus, the talent won the first set 6-2, and in the second he repeated the exercise to come within a set of a new title on the "sacred grass". The third set was also the most even - Djokovic showed fighting spirit and came back from 4-5 and 0-40 down to take things to a tiebreak, but there was no strength for more and in the end he collected one of his heaviest defeats in the finals at Grand Slam tournaments.
Nole failed to triumph for the eighth time at the All England Club, with which he would have equaled the legend Roger Federer. His success would have been his 25th Slam, which would have tied him for the most titles in both men's and women's singles (Margaret Court has 24).
Alcaraz, for his part, defended his title at Wimbledon and added a fourth Slam crown to his collection after those at the US Open and Roland Garros, the latter in May. The Spaniard is the fourth player in the Open Era with at least four titles at the age of 21 or under, after Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker and Mats Wilander. He is also the sixth in the Open Era with a double - Roland Garros and Wimbledon - within one season.
Players will now turn their attention to the upcoming Olympic tournament in Paris, which will be held from July 27 to July 4. | BGNES
