European aircraft maker Airbus announced it received 2,094 aircraft orders last year, a record for the group.
Airlines are preparing for further global passenger growth and are looking for more economical aircraft.
The company also said that despite persistent supply chain issues, it delivered 735 aircraft to customers last year, surpassing its own target of 720 deliveries.
The new orders broke Airbus' previous record of 1,503 aircraft in 2013. The company continues to reap the success of its popular A320 family for shorter flights and A350 for long-haul routes.
"After the Covid-19 pandemic, we initially expected the aviation sector to recover sometime in the period 2023-2025, but what we saw in 2023 was a return much earlier than expected," said commercial director Christian Scherer .
Major contracts were awarded to airlines including Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo, which ordered 500 A320s – the largest civil aviation order in history – as well as Air India (250 aircraft) and Turkish Airlines (230 aircraft).
"We have never sold so many A320s or A350s in just one year," Scherer emphasized.
By the end of last year, the company's total order volume amounted to 8,598 aircraft.
Airbus has started development of a successor to the popular A320 family for the second half of 2030 and aims to launch a hydrogen-powered aircraft - which will not emit CO2 - by 2035/BGNES
