Owners are accusing Adele of sabotaging the sale of a £6m mansion she lived in, claiming the singer once said it was haunted, the BBC reports.
In 2012, the award-winning singer rented the Lock House building in Partridge Green, West Sussex.
The owner had submitted planning permission to convert the property from one dwelling into three residential units and to convert the existing garage and flat into a separate cottage.
In the application, the owner said that comments made by Adele about the 10-bedroom house being haunted during an interview had hindered the sale process.
"The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and defaced the property by saying it was haunted. This comment negatively impacted future marketing efforts and continues to impact the reputation of the property to this day," said the owner.
Discussing Lock House in an interview with Anderson Cooper on the BBC when she lived at the property, Adele states::
"It's all quite scary, really. I'm not going to walk around here on my own. It gives me the shivers."
Adele did not use the word "haunted" during the interview.
After the singer left the property, it was listed for sale again, but received no offers.
It was then leased to a tenant who wanted to use the property to run a bespoke tailoring business. However, it later emerged that the tenant was running a holiday home with 11 guest bedrooms and a fitness camp.
According to the application, the owner had been actively trying to sell the property for about 14 years.
The only offer he ever received was in August 2020, but the potential buyer backed out after learning of the property's alleged status.
Lock House was originally built around 1909 before undergoing a major redevelopment programme in the 1940s.
In 1971, it was subdivided and auctioned off into 26 separate lots. However, it was subsequently purchased by the church and converted into a convent.
The current owner acquired Lock House in 2003 from a real estate dealer who had previously purchased it after the convent moved to Albourne. | BGNES
