A meeting between Trump and Putin is underway

US President-elect Donald Trump has said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin wants to meet with him and that the details of talks between the two are currently being worked out.

Trump made the announcement just a week and a half before taking office, following through on campaign promises to secure peace in Ukraine, which has been under attack from a Russian invasion since February 2022.

"He wants to meet and we're preparing," Trump said at a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

"President Putin wants us to meet, he even said it publicly. We need to end this war, which is a bloody mess," Trump added.

The president-elect has yet to put forward concrete proposals for a ceasefire or peace agreement and has frequently criticized the large amount of military aid the United States is sending to Kiev.
