A French police officer shot dead an Algerian man armed with a knife and an iron rod who tried to set fire to a synagogue in the city of Rouen, AFP reported.
France's Jewish community, the world's third largest, has been reeling for months from a rising tide of anti-Semitism.
Emergency services were alerted after a fire was discovered in the synagogue. The man was seen on her roof brandishing an iron rod and a kitchen knife, said the prosecutor handling the case.
"The attacker ran towards one of the police officers, threatening him with a knife. The officer shot him five times, hitting him four times,” the prosecutor said.
The attacker died on the spot.
"The attack is an anti-Semitic act against a place that is sacred to the Republic. I regret the unacceptable, vile violence against Jews in France," said Interior Minister Géral Darmanin.
"The man is an Algerian whose application for a residence permit in France for medical treatment was rejected by the authorities. His appeal against the deportation order was rejected and he was wanted by the security forces for deportation,” the minister said.
"He is a particularly dangerous, particularly aggressive person, but there is no evidence of radicalization. If he had been arrested, he would have been detained before being expelled to his homeland," Darmanin added./BGNES
