French police arrested 79 people after protesters stormed the main wholesale market complex in the Paris region during nationwide farmers' demonstrations, a police source told AFP.
Protesters briefly entered the warehouse area of the market in Rungis, south of Paris, and caused damage. They were dispersed by security forces, added the source, who asked not to be named.
Television footage showed a heavy presence of security forces around the market, including armoured gendarmerie vehicles. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
The action took place after dozens of farmers from the Lot-et-Garonne department in southwestern France arrived at the market.
Earlier, 18 people who tried to block Rungis were arrested for "obstructing traffic", police said. Prosecutors said 15 of them had been taken into custody.
Thousands of farmers from across the country gathered in Paris and other cities, setting up blockades to stop traffic on highways, in protests where the government has largely kept a conciliatory tone.
But Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has made it clear that the actions in Rungis, which supplies food and other essentials to much of the 12-million-strong Paris region, and at other key infrastructure such as Paris airports would constitute a border crossing. / BGNES
