Exactly 48 years ago, the legendary Nadia Comaneci made one of the most memorable achievements in the history of the Olympic Games.
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, the then 14-year-old Romanian received a perfect 10 for her performance on parallel bars during the gymnastics tournament.
Comaneci thus became the first gymnast in history with a perfect score. Curiously, the electronic scoreboard in the Montreal hall does not have the ability to display four figures, as it was inconceivable that anyone would receive a 10.00 rating. Because of this, a score of 1.00 lights up on the scoreboard, which initially causes confusion among spectators and competitors. Soon after, it becomes clear that Nadia Comaneci has achieved the impossible - she received a perfect ten.
In the following days, Comaneci got six more perfect tens on his way to winning three gold medals in Montreal. Four years later, she also won two titles at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. In the following years, Comaneci had difficulty getting permission to leave Romania, and she eventually ended her career in May 1984, shortly before the Los Angeles Olympics, which boycotted by the Eastern Bloc.
In 1989, she emigrated to the USA, where she lives to this day. Over the past 35 years, Nadia Comaneci has worked as a trainer and model and is involved in business. "When I'm afraid of a challenge, I don't run away from it. Instead, I strengthen myself against it, because the only way to overcome fear is to crush it with your feet," said the 62-year-old Comaneci. | BGNES
