Generation Alpha now has new competition.
Babies born since January 1 are part of the Beta generation. This is the name of the generation born from 2025 to 2039.
The research company McCrindle reported on its blog that by 2035 Generation Beta will make up 16% of the world's population and that many children from it will live to see the XXII century.
The company was founded by social researcher Mark McCrindle, who coined the term Generation Alpha, Science Alert reported.
Here are the most commonly used generations for those born in the last 100 years:
- Generation Beta: 2025-2039
- Generation Alpha: 2010-2024
- Generation Z: 1997-2009
- Generation Y/Millennials: 1981-1996
- Generation X: 1965-1980
- Boomers: 1946-1964
- Silent Generation: 1928-1945
Generation Beta is expected to be heavily influenced by technology, just like their predecessors Generation Alpha, often referred to as the "iPad kids" because of their reliance on technology.
McCrindle writes that the lives of Generation Beta will be defined by artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, and that they will face major societal challenges such as the climate crisis and changes in the world's population.
Parents of Generation Alpha children are increasingly faced with the question of how to manage their children's relationship with the technology and AI tools that have become widespread since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.
A Pew Research Center study released in November 2023 found that one in five students who have heard of ChatGPT uses it to help themselves for school.
In the past, the validity of using generational names has been questioned.
In 2019, Pew Research Center president Michael Dimmock warned that it's best to view categories as a lens through which to think about societal change, rather than as a label to simplify differences between groups. | BGNES
