10-men Uruguay break Brazil's hearts to reach Copa America semi-finals

Uruguay qualified for the semi-finals of the Copa America tournament after knocking out Brazil after a 0:0 draw in regular time and 4:2 on penalties.

Uruguay once again showed their spirit after being reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute. Nahitan Nandez received a straight red card. By the end of the regular 90 minutes, however, the Seleção, who were without their big star in attack Vinicius Junior due to accumulated yellow cards, never found a way to the opponent's goal and it came to the roulette of penalties. There, Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz missed two of the first three performances for the Brazilians, while Uruguay started with 3 from 3. A miss from Jose Gimenez brought back the hopes of Dorival Junior and company, but Manuel Ugarte put an end to the controversy and sent Marcelo Bielsa's team into the Final Four.

There, Uruguay's opponent will be Colombia, who reached the semi-finals in an undisputed way after beating Panama 5:0. The Colombians made it three goals before the break through Jhon Cordoba, James Rodriguez from the penalty spot and Luis Diaz - James assisted his strike partners' goals. After the break, Richard Rios and substitute Miguel Borja scored two more goals. The semi-final between Uruguay and Colombia will be played on July 11 in Charlotte.

In the other semi-final match, reigning trophy holders Argentina take on debutant Canada a day earlier in New Jersey. | BGNES
