UMich's 'Sustainaball': Showcasing Sustainable Fashion"

Over 100 University of Michigan students gathered at the Michigan League for "Sustainaball," an event celebrating sustainable fashion and student-led environmentalism. Co-hosted by U-M sustainability organizations VIPs Club and Eco Threads, the event featured a variety of activities, including educational sessions and crafting opportunities. The highlight was the VIPs Club Fashion Show, showcasing handmade clothing pieces by students using eco-friendly materials, the Michigan daily reports.

LSA senior Sophia Kamien, secretary of the nonprofit VIPs Fund, emphasized the collection's unique message of love for sustainable fashion, all made by students for students, utilizing upcycled materials.

Daphne Matter, founder of VIPs Club, highlighted the organization's commitment to community-oriented conservation projects, with proceeds from handmade crochet pieces going towards protecting endangered species.

Aside from the fashion show, attendees enjoyed crochet and knitting workshops, zine-making, trivia, mending stations, and a clothing swap organized by Eco Threads. Mori Rothhorn, co-founder of Eco Threads, emphasized the importance of clothing swaps in reducing fast-fashion waste and fostering connections.

Rothhorn highlighted the event's role in promoting sustainable practices within the fashion industry, urging for institutional changes and conscious consumer choices. "Sustainaball" served as both a celebration of sustainable fashion and a call to action for a more eco-conscious future. /BGNES
