Supermodel Elle Macpherson returned to the catwalk

Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson returned to the catwalk after 16 years at the Melbourne Fashion Festival.

She modeled at the opening of the event's premium catwalk series, held at the Royal Exhibition Building.

The evening's two fashion shows featured brands such as Aje, Ngali, Oroton, Anna Quan and Bianca Spender.

Born in 1964, Macpherson's career as a model has lasted longer than many Australian fashion brands.

In 1982, at the age of 18, she appeared in a TAB Cola television commercial and went on to become one of the world's most famous supermodels.

She became known as "The Body" after a cover story in Time magazine in 1986 and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue a record five times.

Macpherson, who launched a number of business ventures in fashion and beauty, also appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics as an Australian icon.

As an actress, Macpherson appeared in supporting roles in Sirens (1994), The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) and as Julie Madison in Batman and Robin (1997) as well as lead roles in The Edge (1997) and South Kensington (2001). She had a recurring role on Friends and hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live.

Another model, Megan Gale, returned to the catwalk during the 2023 Fashion Festival to open the autumn/winter show for David Jones. /BGNES
