Milan Fashion Week ignites the catwalks

The women's shows by Fendi, Prada, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana, among many others, promise a dose of festivity and frou-frou in Italy's northern fashion capital.

After fashion weeks in New York and London, Milan is having its moment in the spotlight again, with 56 shows through Sunday on the fall/winter 2024-2025 calendar.

But they take place against a backdrop of uncertainty in the global luxury fashion market.

Italy's fashion sector - which includes clothing and leather, footwear, jewellery, cosmetics and accessories - grew by four per cent to nearly 103 billion euros last year, according to estimates by the National Chamber of Italian Fashion.

The head of the association, Carlo Capasa, said it was too early to say how 2024 would affect the industry.

"It's a complicated year, it will take resilience," Capasa told reporters earlier this month.

"We know there will be three wars, European and American elections. This is a year of transition. / BGNES
