Environmentally responsible fashion in Paris by McCartney and Serre

On the penultimate day of Paris Fashion Week, two of the most environmentally minded designers presented their autumn-winter collections, AFP reports.

With a collection that saw her father and fellow Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr watching from the front row, British designer Stella McCartney called on the fashion world to "wake up".

McCartney said that 90% of the outfits were made from "environmentally responsible" materials, and that she looked for solutions that were indistinguishable to the naked eye from traditional textiles, such as a white suit made from vegan leather.

The outfits were a little more eccentric than usual, with exaggerated proportions, following the trend for oversized suits, and with a suit that looked like a big pile of knitwear in turquoise or fire red.

Adding to the "cool-kid" atmosphere of the show was the fact that one of the models was Lily Moss, Kate Moss' daughter.

Another designer who dabbles in ecology, 32-year-old Marine Serre, staged her show in Parisian eatery Ground Control, among coffee tables, pizza stands and a florist.

The French designer, who uses as many recycled materials as possible in her outfits, said she dislikes the way big brands build temporary structures just for a 10-minute fashion show.

"I like to find a place that already has a vibe and energy. Most of the time when you do a show, it's just in a box, and I'm a little bit against that," she said backstage.

Her models were also eclectic, from older women to a small baby wearing a white dress and a baby carriage printed with Serre's signature crescent moon.

Other styles included a sheer black dress - everywhere this season - but worn over sportswear rather than skimpy lingerie.

Bolstered by the LVMH award she received in 2017, the young designer has found her niche with her recycled aesthetic and mix of styles combining sportswear and haute couture. / BGNES
